Both parents have the right to take up to 13 weeks unpaid parental leave before their child is 5 (or 18 for disabled children). Adopting parents can take it within 5 years of the adoption.  13 weeks’ leave is available for each child.

Parents must have one year’s continuous service with their employer at the time the leave is taken.

The leave is personal to the parent, not the employer. So for example, a parent who had taken 2 weeks with one employer would then be able to take only 11 weeks from his/her next employer (once they had been there a year).

Leave must be taken in blocks of one week.

Some terms and conditions of the contract of employment, including for example accrual of holiday. The parent has the right to return to the same or a similar job.
